UPDATED July 4 2003
I have totally re-designed the paddle and wheel boss assembly for both smoother gear changes and ease of repair

The Wheel Boss
The boss is made from 2" square steel tube. Hopefully you can see the configuration in the photo. The wheel simply butts onto the boss and is screwed on. I made a new shaft and welded a square plate onto the end, whcih acts as a flange to bolt the boss to.
Shifters
The paddles themselves are made from aluminium channel, with tabs made from separate pieces of flat aluminium bent into shape and pop-riveted to the channel. These were all filed and polished prior to assembly. They pivot on a couple of bolts scrounged from an old alternator, which suited because they only had thread at the ends, leaving a smooth surface for the paddles to pivot on. You can see the springs tucked in the channel. The channel was cut in such a way as to provide a stop in travel when pulled back.
